Brilliant piece drawing the BBC parallel. The 'make once, rent forever' model of foundation models really does mirror feudal land arrangements better than classical capitalism. What's most striking is how the physical layer dependency creats the vulnerability, the UK can't finesse its way around not owning compute infrastructure through clever regulation. I saw similar dynamics in telecom policy where nations thought licensing frameworks could substitute for ownership but ended up just administering someone else's system.
