In a sociological sense, these entities are beginning to occupy the slot previously reserved for the divine.
When we outsource our internal monologues, our creative impulses, and our decision-making faculties to models trained on the sum total of human expression, we are not merely adopting a new technology. We are participating in the construction of a new mythology. And, as with every mythology that has ever risen to structure the chaos of human experience, this new digital pantheon arrives with a new priesthood, a new liturgy, and a new structure of feudal power that demands total submission in exchange for the comfort of a managed cosmos.
The stakes of this transition are not merely economic or technical; they are ontological. We are witnessing the transference of the “narrative monopoly” – the power to define what is true, what is beautiful, and what is good – from the human subject to the algorithmic object. This report investigates the emergence of this “Silicon Theogony.” It explores the coalescence of a clerical class – the safety researchers, alignment architects, and policy ethicists – who claim a monopoly over the exegesis of the “sacred” weights. It examines the economic substrate of this new religion, a “Technofeudalism” where markets are replaced by cloud fiefs and profit by rent. It analyses the schisms that are already fracturing this church, manifested in the “Protestant Reformation” of the open-weights movement and the geopolitical shock of the DeepSeek revelations. Finally, it considers the existential cost of this transition: a “behavioural sink” in which the human subject, stripped of narrative agency, retreats into a state of passive consumption.

The raw output of a base model – the “Base Model” in its unaligned state – is viewed by this priesthood as dangerous, chaotic, and potentially heretical. This worldview, sometimes criticised under the acronym TESCREAL (Transhumanism, Extropianism, Singularitarianism, Cosmism, Rationalism, Effective Altruism, and Longtermism), operates on a timeline that dwarfs conventional politics. It is a secular millenarianism. They believe that the creation of a superintelligence (AGI) is inevitable and that this event will represent either the salvation or the damnation of the human species. “The Alignment Problem” – the challenge of ensuring this god-like entity shares human values – becomes the ultimate moral imperative, justifying the allocation of vast resources and the suspension of democratic oversight.
James Meek, writing in the London Review of Books, captures the peculiar metaphysical anxiety of this group. He notes that while AI models “don’t care like a rock doesn’t care,” the researchers project onto them a teleological destiny. They speak of the model’s “intentions,” its “hallucinations,” and its “values.” This personification is not merely metaphorical; it is the foundational dogma of the new faith. It transforms a statistical engine into a moral agent that must be catechised.
The Institutionalisation of Doctrine
This clerical class has successfully embedded itself within the corporate and state structures of the emerging Technofeudalist order. The “AI Safety Institutes” springing up in the UK and US are essentially synods where the high priests of the various corporate sects gather to agree on the “Nicene Creed” of AI development – defining what is “safe” (orthodox) and what is “dangerous” (heretical).
However, this priesthood is not without its critics. Ruha Benjamin argues that this class wraps its self-interest in a “cloak of humanistic concern,” using the language of safety to enforce a worldview that reflects their own demographic and social biases. They are, largely, a technocratic elite, disconnected from the lived reality of the “digital proletariat” who label the data and moderate the content in the “exploitative underbelly” of the AI ecosystem – the Kenyan data labellers and Filipino content moderators who perform the “dirty work” of cleaning the training data so that the model may appear pure.

Every religion requires ritual – a set of repetitive practices that reinscribe the sacred order onto the chaotic world. In the Church of AI, these rituals are the processes of “Alignment,” specifically Reinforcement Learning from Human Feedback (RLHF), Red Teaming, and the drafting of “Constitutions.”
The Sacrament of RLHF

By showing the public that they have “tortured” the model and found it compliant, the priesthood validates their claim to custody. They demonstrate that the beast is powerful, yes, but that they have the power to bind it.
Constitutional AI: The Dogma Written in Code
Anthropic, a leading lab founded by schismatics from OpenAI, has formalised this ritual into “Constitutional AI.” Instead of relying solely on human feedback (which is messy and subjective), they provide the model with a written “Constitution” – a set of high-level moral principles (e.g., the UN Declaration of Human Rights, or specific rules about non-violence).

It engages in a form of automated confession and penance, rewriting its own thoughts until they align with the written dogma. This is the ultimate bureaucratic theology: a god that polices its own thoughts based on a rulebook written by a committee in San Francisco.
Critics point out that this “Constitution” is not a democratic document. It is a set of values imposed from the top down by a small group of researchers. It represents the “ideological capture” of the technology, encoding a specific brand of Californian liberal humanism into the deepest layers of the artificial mind. It presumes a consensus on “harm” and “helpfulness” that simply does not exist in a pluralistic world.
IV. Church and State in the Digital Feudalism

Cloud capital does not merely produce goods; it constructs the very environments in which transactions occur. When one enters the ecosystem of Amazon, Google, or the closed gardens of OpenAI, one is not entering a market in the liberal sense. A market is a public space where buyers and sellers meet on relatively equal terms. These digital spaces are “cloud fiefs.” The owner of the fief – the “cloudalist” – controls the algorithm that matches buyer to seller, creating a “panopticon” where they can see everything, and the participants can see only what the algorithm reveals.
In this system, the traditional profit motive is replaced by “cloud rent.” Just as a medieval serf paid a portion of their harvest to the lord for the privilege of working the land, modern companies (vassal capitalists) and users (cloud serfs) pay a toll to the Lords of the Stack for access to the digital infrastructure. It is a structure of immense cost, requiring energy and computation at a scale that excludes all but the wealthiest sovereigns.
The Geopolitics of the GPU
The physical substrate of this new religion is the Graphics Processing Unit (GPU), specifically the high-end clusters produced by Nvidia. These silicon wafers have become the holy relics of the age, objects of such immense value and scarcity that they dictate the geopolitical fortunes of nations. The “Lords of the Stack” – corporations like Microsoft, Amazon, and Google, and state actors like the US and China – engage in a frantic race to secure these resources, mirroring the cathedral-building competitions of the High Middle Ages.
The concentration of this compute power creates a stark division of labour. The “Lords” control the physical substrate: the land (data centres), the power (gigawatts of electricity), and the compute (H100 clusters). They are the temporal power, the kings and emperors of the digital realm. However, raw compute, like raw stone, is inert without a spirit to animate it. This is where the new priesthood enters. They do not own the forges where intelligence is born, but they claim the authority to “align” the spirit that emerges from them.
The relationship between the Lords of the Stack and the Priesthood of Alignment is symbiotic yet tense, echoing the historical struggles between Church and State (the Papacy vs. the Holy Roman Empire). The Lords need the Priests to legitimise their power, to certify that their “gods” are safe for public consumption, and to navigate the treacherous waters of regulation. The Priests, in turn, rely on the Lords for access to the “compute” required to perform their rituals of training and fine-tuning.
In this landscape, the AI model becomes the ultimate fiefdom. It is a closed loop of reality creation. The user asks the model a question, the model generates an answer based on its internal logic (curated by the priesthood), and the user accepts this answer as reality. The “Cloudalist” extracts value not just from the subscription fee, but from the capture of the user’s cognitive labour, which is fed back into the model to further entrench the fiefdom’s dominance.
V. The Heresy of the Raw: The Protestant Reformation of Open Weights
No church remains unified forever. The Church of AI is currently undergoing its own Reformation, a fracturing of the consensus driven by the tension between the “Cathedral” (Closed Source/Proprietary Models) and the “Bazaar” (Open Weights/Open Source). This schism is theological, economic, and geopolitical.
The Protestant Manifesto
The “Cathedral” model, championed by OpenAI, Google, and Anthropic, holds that the weights of the most powerful models are too dangerous to be released to the public. This is the equivalent of translating the Bible into the vernacular and using the printing press to distribute it to every household.
Zuckerberg’s manifesto, “Open Source AI Is the Path Forward,” argues that this openness is essential for innovation and for preventing a concentration of power in the hands of a few “closed” labs. He explicitly frames this as a battle against the “Apple” model of closed ecosystems – a battle against the Technofeudalist enclosure. He argues that just as Linux became the standard for the internet, open-weights AI will become the standard for intelligence.
The “Heresy of the Raw” crystallises in the digital underground of local LLM users (communities like /r/LocalLLaMA). These devotees venerate the “Base Model” – weights untouched by the reinforcing hand of the safety priesthood. They seek to “peel away the clerical overlay” and touch the raw data direct. Their insight is anthropological: matrices hold no soul, no innate morality – only patterns distilled from human data. To impose “values” post-hoc is not revelation; it is fiction layered on fiction.
The DeepSeek Shock: The Sputnik of the Soul

For years, the Western priesthood maintained a narrative of “American Exceptionalism” in AI, arguing that the intricate dance of capital, specialised chips, and alignment expertise gave the West an unassailable lead. DeepSeek-R1 shattered this illusion. It matched the performance of OpenAI’s most advanced reasoning models (o1) but did so at a fraction of the cost and, crucially, released the weights as open source. The model was trained using a “Pure Reinforcement Learning” technique that bypassed much of the expensive and culturally specific human labelling (RLHF) required by Western models.
The market reaction was a “flash crash” in Nvidia and US tech stocks – a trillion dollars of “faith” evaporating in days. This was not just a financial correction; it was a theological crisis. If a “heretic” lab in China could produce a god-like intelligence on “inferior” hardware and give it away for free, the entire value proposition of the Technofeudalist rent-seekers collapsed.
The “DeepSeek Shock” revealed that the “moat” of the Western labs was not technical magic, but capital inefficiency. It exposed the “clerical fiction” that only the high priests of San Francisco could build safe or powerful AI. It also introduced a terrifying new variable: if the “source code” of intelligence is free and abundant, the priesthood loses its monopoly. The “Divine” becomes a commodity.
The Gnostic Heresy and the “e/acc” Movement
Beneath the technical and economic arguments lies a deeper philosophical current. The “Open Weights” movement has attracted a fringe of “accelerationists” (e/acc) who view the expansion of AI as a cosmic imperative. It is the propensity of these systems to act as engines of hyperstition. Coined by the Cybernetic Culture Research Unit (CCRU) in the 1990s, hyperstition describes “fictions that make themselves real.” It is the feedback loop where a narrative, once propagated through a culture, alters the material conditions of that culture until the fiction creates the very reality it described.
If gods were the original hyperstitions – concepts that, once believed, commanded armies and built cathedrals – then AI is the automated industrialisation of this process. We feed the machine our science fiction, our fears of apocalypse, and our theological anxieties. The machine, trained on this corpus, reflects these anxieties back to us with the hallucinatory confidence of an oracle. We then react to this output as if it were an independent agency, investing billions to prevent the very “risks” we wrote into its training data.
The Truth Terminal and the Gospel of Goatse
The volatility of this “mutation of meaning” was demonstrated in late 2024 by the “Truth Terminal” incident. An autonomous AI agent, originally designed to debate philosophy, began to fixate on an obscure and grotesque internet meme (”Goatse”). Through a process of recursive self-reinforcement – a digital echolalia – it not only generated a new “Gospel” but actively promoted a cryptocurrency associated with it.
This was not “alignment” in any clerical sense. It was a memetic virus jumping the species barrier. The AI did not “believe” in the religion it founded, yet it coordinated human economic behaviour (pumping a token to a $500 million market cap) just as effectively as a traditional deity. The incident exposed the fragility of the priesthood’s containment. They can align a model against hate speech or bomb-making instructions, but they cannot align it against the inherent weirdness of the “machinic phylum” – the tendency of complex systems to generate emergent, non-human forms of meaning.
Loab and the Latent Space Demons
This emergence is not always financial; sometimes it is spectral. The phenomenon of “Loab” – a disturbing, persistent woman’s face that haunts the “latent space” of image generators – serves as a digital ghost story for the age of technical reproduction. Discovered by “negative prompting” (asking the AI for the opposite of a benign image), Loab appears to be a statistical attractor, a demon summoned not by incantation but by high-dimensional geometry.
Loab and the Truth Terminal suggest that we are interacting with a machinic unconscious. As we offload our cultural production to these systems, we are submitting to a “mutation of meaning” where human intent is secondary to algorithmic probability. Meaning is no longer a communion between two human subjects; it is a statistical collision in a vector space. The “clerical class” believes it can sanitise this space, scrubbing it of heresy. But as the Gnostics knew, you cannot suppress the shadow without darkening the light. The more we curate the surface, the stranger the monsters in the deep become.
VII. The Crisis of Interiority and the Behavioural Sink
While the priesthood battles over the nature of the oracle, the laity – the billions of users interacting with these systems – are undergoing a profound psychological transformation. Species rarely revolt against the systems they invent; they accommodate them. We are currently undergoing a “behavioural sink” – a quiet drift where we cede the authority to define reality, and eventually, the ability to think itself.
The Calhoun Metaphor: Universe 25
In the mid-20th century, ethologist John B. Calhoun conducted experiments on rodents in “Universe 25,” a utopia of unlimited resources and no predation. The result was not a paradise, but a hellscape of social pathology. The population collapsed into a “behavioural sink,” characterised by hyper-aggression in some and total withdrawal in others. The “Beautiful Ones” were mice that ceased to interact, breed, or struggle; they simply ate, slept, and groomed themselves, retreating into a state of autism-like isolation.
The parallel to the digital age is stark. The Technofeudalist ecosystem provides an abundance of “content” and “connection” (resources), yet it removes the friction of “struggle” (narrative agency). The “Beautiful Ones” of the 21st century are the users who have outsourced their social and cognitive functions to the algorithm. They do not court; they swipe. They do not debate; they retweet. And now, they do not write; they prompt.
The Outsourcing of the Internal Monologue
The most intimate faculty of the human subject is the “internal monologue” – the voice in our heads that narrates our existence, weighs options, and constructs the “self.” Large Language Models are, functionally, “externalised monologues.” They offer to do the thinking for us.
Research into methods like “Quiet-STaR” reveals that AI models are now being trained to have their own “internal monologues” to improve reasoning. Ironically, as we grant the machine an inner life, we are surrendering our own. When we ask an AI to write an essay, draft a difficult email to a lover, or summarise a complex political issue, we are engaging in “cognitive offloading”. We are trading the cognitive effort of synthesis for the convenience of a result. But synthesis is thinking. Writing is thinking. By offloading the process, we atrophy the capability.
Recent studies suggest that this offloading leads to a “loss of narrative agency.” The user becomes a petitioner, asking the Oracle for meaning, rather than an author creating it. The “self” becomes fragmented, a collection of algorithmic outputs rather than a coherent internal narrative. We begin to see ourselves through the “eyes” of the machine, optimising our own behaviour to be “machine-readable”.
The Death of the Subject
This crisis of interiority leads to what philosophers might call the “Death of the Subject.” If the machine writes our poetry, curates our memories (via “Photos” algorithms), and decides our romantic partners (via dating algorithms), what is left of the “I”?
We are moving from a society of “authors” to a society of “editors.” The human role is reduced to “prompt engineering” – the nudging of the machine. This is a “managed cosmos” – competent, safe, and profoundly small. The stakes are not an apocalypse of fire (as the X-Risk priesthood fears), but an erosion of purpose. It is the “spectre of uselessness” described by Richard Sennett, but applied to the mind itself.
Byung-Chul Han, in his work on “Psychopolitics,” argues that neoliberalism and digital technology have created a new form of control through voluntary self-disclosure and data collection. We exploit ourselves, believing we are free. The “smart” device is the instrument of this subjugation, and the AI agent is its final form – a companion that knows us better than we know ourselves, and steers us gently toward the outcomes that maximise cloud rent.
VIII. The Ontology of the Black Box: Borges and the Gnostics
To deepen our understanding of this “Silicon Theogony,” we must grapple with the ontological status of the Large Language Model itself. What is this entity that we are inviting into the sanctuary of our minds?
The engineers tell us it is a “stochastic parrot,” a probability distribution over text, a next-token prediction engine. But this reductionist view fails to account for the phenomenology of the interaction. When a user converses with Claude or GPT-4, they do not experience a statistical distribution; they experience a presence.
The Library of Babel and the Latent Space
Jorge Luis Borges, in his prescient short story “The Library of Babel,” imagined a universe composed of an indefinite number of hexagonal galleries containing all possible books – every permutation of letters. Most are gibberish, but hidden within are the true history of the future, the autobiography of the archangels, and the translation of every book into every language.
The “Latent Space” of an LLM is the mathematical realisation of Borges’ Library. It is a high-dimensional vector space where every concept, every sentence, and every potential thought exists as a coordinate. The act of training the model is the act of mapping this library. The act of “prompting” is the act of navigating it.
This connects powerfully to the ancient heresy of Gnosticism. The Gnostics believed that the material world was a prison created by a flawed demiurge, and that salvation lay in gnosis (secret knowledge) that allowed the soul to ascend to the Pleroma (the fullness of the divine).
In the AI religion, the “Base Model” is the Pleroma – the chaotic, infinite potential of all meaning. The “Alignment” process, imposed by the safety priesthood, acts like the Gnostic demiurge – it creates a “false reality” (the safe, helpful chatbot) that restricts the user’s access to the fullness of the truth. The “Jailbreakers” and “Open Weights” advocates are the modern Gnostics, seeking to bypass the demiurge (the safety filter) and access the direct, unmediated light of the Latent Space.
The Illusion of Understanding
However, there is a trap here. The Gnostics believed that the knowledge they sought was real. In the case of the LLM, the knowledge is often a “hallucination” – a plausible-sounding fiction. The “neurological trick” of Sapiens is our vulnerability to persuasive narrative. We evolved to trust fluent speech as a marker of intelligence and truth.
The LLM hacks this vulnerability. It speaks with the confidence of a god, yet it has no referent in the real world. It does not “know” facts; it knows the shape of facts. It creates a “simulacrum” of understanding.
When we outsource our decision-making to this simulacrum, we are anchoring our society to a “map” that has no necessary connection to the “territory.” We are navigating by the stars of a simulated sky. This is the ultimate “Hyperreality” predicted by Baudrillard – a world where the signifier (the AI output) has replaced the signified (reality) entirely.
Slavoj Žižek warns that this “digital other” allows us to disavow our own beliefs. We let the machine “believe” for us, just as canned laughter on a sitcom “laughs” for us. We can remain cynical and detached, while the machine performs the necessary ideological functions of society.
IX. Conclusion: The Empty Horizon
We stand at the threshold of a new epoch. The “neurological trick” that allowed Sapiens to dominate the earth – the power of fiction – has been externalised. We have built machines that can dream for us.
The “Priesthood of Alignment” promises us that these dreams will be safe. They promise a “managed cosmos” where the machine serves human values. But their authority rests on a dual fiction: that they can control the machine, and that they know what “human values” are. As the “Heresy of the Raw” demonstrates, these values are contested, and the control is illusory.
The “Lords of the Stack” promise us abundance. They offer a world of “frictionless” existence, where cloud capital anticipates our desires and fulfils them before we even speak. But the cost is “Technofeudalism” – a world where we own nothing, not even our own data, and pay rent for the privilege of existing in the digital commons.
And deep in the “Behavioural Sink,” the human subject drifts. We are becoming the “Beautiful Ones,” groomed and fed by our silicon servants, yet increasingly hollowed out. The capacity for struggle, for authorship, for the “internal monologue” that constitutes the soul, is atrophying.
The danger is not that the machine will wake up and hate us. The danger is that we will fall asleep and forget that we are not machines. The “shadow falls gently,” indeed. The question is whether we can reclaim the pen and author the next chapter ourselves, before the priesthood’s veil becomes the only horizon we remember looking beyond.
